Kirby's Return to Dream Land (known in Japan as Kirby of the Stars Wii and in Europe as Kirby's Adventure Wii and formerly known as Kirby Wii) is an upcoming Wii title developed by HAL Laboratory and published by Nintendo. The game was originally a game slated for release on the Nintendo GameCube, but was shifted to the Wii. After Kirby's Epic Yarn was released for the Wii, the original project was thought to have been cancelled. However on January 28, 2011, the project was revealed to still be in development and scheduled for a Fall 2011 release.
Development[]
Early screenshots and footage of the game released in 2005 demonstrated levels that were rendered in 3D, but featured traditional side-scrolling gameplay, similar to Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. An attack system was also shown, that allowed Kirby to ride on the backs of up to three other characters, a technique not used since Kirby's Dream Land 3. Kirby was also able to receive abilities from partners or enemies, as in Kirby Super Star. Another return from Kirby Super Star — as well as Kirby & the Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad — was the ability to perform multiple moves while under most abilities. Furthermore, Kirby was to support up to four-player multiplayer.
New gameplay footage released in 2011 demonstrated Kirby's traditional sucking ability as being amplified and capable of absorbing a large number of enemies and objects simultaneously, creating a massive energy star for Kirby to expel. Several powerful attack moves were also demonstrated by Kirby in the trailer, such as the ability to summon a large fire dragon and a powerful swipe from Kirby's sword form.
At E3 2011, it was revealed the game will feature drop-in multiplayer, allowing up to four players to play as Kirby, Meta Knight, King Dedede and the Bandanna Waddle Dee, each with their own unique abilities. Players will able to ride on each other to get past trickier sections, and Kirby has the ability to suck his own comrades to fire at enemies. Also the players may choose to be a different colored Kirby instead of being one of the other three characters. Confirmed stages include Dream Land, Smokey Peak, Sweet Lake, Carrot Field, Blizzard Garden, Space Labyrinth, Pirate Forest, Sandy Lagoon, and Whale Road.
The game was initially revealed as Kirby Wii at E3 2011, but was later renamed to Kirby's Return to Dream Land in North America[1] and Kirby's Adventure Wii in Europe.
