Cave Story is a freeware action-adventure video game released in 2004 for the PC originally. It was designed and programmed by Daisuke Amaya, art-name Pixel, in his spare time. The game is a homage to classic games that Amaya played as a kid, like Metroid and Castlevania. Cave Story slowly gained popularity as an indie game. Independent video game company, Nicalis, worked with Daisuke Amaya to bring Cave Story to the WiiWare and DSiWare platforms. This version has ben nominated for 2010 Nintendo Power Game of the Year. In 2011, NIS America confirmed that they will be publishing a 3D Cave Story game for the Nintendo 3DS. The game is a 3D version of the original and has a mode where the all the characters are in their original sprites but in a 3D world. It will take full advantage of the 3DS's abilities.
