Donkey Kong is an arcade game released by Nintendo in 1981. The player controls "Jumpman" (now known as Mario), to go up beams in construction sites to save a princess, Pauline, from Donkey Kong (now known as Cranky Kong). The game is very famous, and it saved Nintendo. because of how popular it was. The video game company had released an earlier game, Radar Scope, which was unsuccessful in North America.
Nintendo asked Shigeru Miyamoto to create a game to replace all of the Radar Scope game cabinents. Donkey Kong would be his first video game. At first he wanted to use Popeye characters in the game, but couldn't get the license. So he came up with Jumpman, Pauline, and Donkey Kong. The game was a hit, with Nintendo getting $280 million from all sold Donkey Kong cabinents by 1983. Nintendo has rereleased the game many times on other game systems.
